PHIL NEWMAN (Set & Costume Designer)
Since graduating in Theatre Design from Croydon College in 1999, Phil has designed a wide range of productions, from small- and medium-scale tours, through site-specific and devised projects, to main house shows.
These have included work for Impetuous Kinship (The Lost Thing), Heartbreak Productions (open-air tours of The Merchant of Venice and The Railway Children), Pursued by a Bear (You Don’t Kiss, Monogamy), Palkettostage (Italian tour of Treasure Island), SNAP Theatre (Funnybones), devised interactive projects for Ladder to the Moon and Trestle Theatre, and tours of Lifting the Mask and Black Atlas for London Shakespeare Workout.
His design for the internationally-acclaimed, award-winning production of John Retallack’s Hannah & Hanna (Time Out Critics Choice) has toured extensively in the UK and abroad (including British Council tours of India and the Philippines) since 2001.
Over the past seven years, Phil has designed eight community tours for Channel/Chalkfoot Theatre (including The Phoenix & the Carpet, The Sea Morgan’s Child, The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists - set to tour the UK this Autumn - and, most recently, Never Ever After) as well as several TIE tours, youth projects and an open-air Taming of the Shrew in the grounds of St Augustine’s Abbey in Canterbury. He has also designed settings for 14 productions at Leicester’s Little Theatre and costumes for The Way of the World (Pentameters) and The Dutch Courtesan (Wimbledon Studio).
Phil's ongoing collaboration with theatre director Olusola Oyeleye has so far produced the world premiere productions of Beverley Naidoo’s The Playground at Polka Theatre (Time Out Critics’ Choice), the critically-acclaimed Ma Joyce’s Tales from the Parlour at Oval House Theatre and, most recently, Call Mr Robeson at C Soco, in Edinburgh.
He has run several design-related workshops for and with students and young people, some as part of his 3 years as Practitioner-in-Residence in Croydon College’s Theatre Design department between 2004 & 2006.
Phil lives in Croydon.
